Whitney Houston and My Advice for Your Family Gatherings

Jill Alexander

There’s something about a song that can transport you back in time. Whitney Houston was one of my favorite artists when I was growing up. The Whitney Houston song I liked the most was greatest love of all. I used to belt it out as loud as I could while driving in the car. I heard it for the first time in a long time the other day when I had the Whitney Houston Pandora station on. So many of the words in that song ring true to me now as an adult.
These are the lyrics that stick out to me the most:

I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity

Heading into the holidays, with lots of family gatherings coming up can be a nerve wracking time for so many. Families can be a great source of rejection for a lot of people.
We worry about what others will say about our changing looks, choices we’ve made, incidents of the past, and a multitude of other things we feel sensitive about.
I’ve gotten in trouble with my own extended family for sticking up for others when someone became snarky or rude to them. My outspokeness has garnered rejection, but, I can live with that. I would have struggled living with myself had I not said something to defend another. I have learned over the years to be true to myself and to live as I believe.
As you head into the holidays, if you’re feeling anxious, I want to give you some advice. Wear what you want, eat what you like, say what you feel. Don’t compromise who you are to please others or get too caught up in what they think of you. You have to live with yourself so love yourself first. Remember the words of Whitney Houston: It is the greatest love of all.
